Mitosis vs Meiosis
Step through both divisions side by side. Watch how the chromosome number and genetic variation differ.
Step 1 of 6
Interphase - the cell prepares
Both divisions begin the same way. During interphase the cell grows, organelles are copied and DNA replicates so every chromosome now consists of two identical sister chromatids joined at the centromere.
Goes in
- • Diploid cell (2n)
Comes out
- • Replicated chromosomes
Interphase is not part of mitosis or meiosis - it is the preparation stage of the cell cycle.
